As you and your team return from vacation, remember that cybercriminals never rest. In fact, research from ProofPoint and Check Point reveals a notable surge in phishing attacks during the summer months. Here’s how you can stay vigilant and safeguard your business.
Why Are Risks Higher in Summer?
Cybercriminals exploit the summer travel season by mimicking hotel and Airbnb platforms, according to Check Point Research. They've identified a 55% rise in newly registered travel-related website domains in May 2025 versus last year, with over 39,000 domains recorded—one in every 21 flagged as suspicious or malicious.
Additionally, the back-to-school period triggers a spike in phishing emails impersonating universities, targeting students and staff alike. Even if your business isn’t directly affected, employees checking personal emails on work devices can unwittingly open the door to cyberattacks with just one click.
How to Protect Your Team
While AI enhances cybersecurity, it also enables more convincing phishing scams. That’s why training yourself and your employees to recognize threats is critical to prevent falling victim.
Follow these essential safety tips:
• Stay alert for suspicious emails. Beyond spotting typos and poor grammar, scrutinize sender addresses and visible link texts carefully—AI-generated emails can appear highly professional.
• Verify URLs thoroughly. Look out for misspelled links or uncommon domain endings like .today or .info, which are often used in scams.
• Access websites directly. Instead of clicking links in emails or messages, manually type the website address or search for it to avoid fake sites.
• Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds an extra layer of protection, ensuring that even if credentials are compromised, your sensitive data stays secure.
• Use caution on public WiFi. When connecting to public networks, always use a VPN to shield your data, especially when handling sensitive information like bookings or banking.
• Avoid personal email on work devices. Mixing personal and business accounts on the same device increases risk. Keep personal activities on personal devices and work tasks on business devices.
• Consult your MSP about endpoint security. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor devices, block phishing attempts, and alert your MSP instantly if a breach occurs, greatly reducing data exposure.
Phishing tactics evolve rapidly, especially with AI advancements. Empower your team with up-to-date knowledge—the strongest defense against cyber threats. Stay informed, stay secure!
